EFSD-Boehringer Ingelheim

Organisme

The European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes (EFSD) was created by the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) to provide multiple funding initiatives in all areas of diabetes research. The aims of EFSD are to encourage and support research in the field of diabetes, to rapidly diffuse acquired knowledge and to facilitate its application.

Descripció

Boehringer Ingelheim is a global group of companies who seek to improve the health and well being of people and animals through being a part of an independent, innovative, research and development driven company.

Programme Research and Focus

In order to encourage new projects aimed at advancing current knowledge in this domain, EFSD and Boehringer Ingelheim have established a new partnership called the EFSD/Boehringer Ingelheim European Diabetes Research Programmes. These Programmes consist of two elements, each with a different focus:

1. Regulations of secretion and/or function of non-insulin peptides from the endocrine pancreas. In particular, proposals dealing with the following are especially but not exclusively, welcome: research into the investigation of the role, function and mechanism of non-beta cells. Only basic research projects will be considered for this Programme.

2. Mechanisms relating renal dysfunction to cardiovascular disease in type 2 diabetes. In particular, proposals dealing with the following are especially, but not exclusively, welcome: projects investigating novel biomarkers or the translation of experimental hypotheses and clinical results. Only clinical / translational research projects will be considered for this Programme.

To achieve the goals and objectives of these Programmes, EFSD and Boehringer Ingelheim invite applications by issuing this "Request for Applications" (RFA), which indicates joint funding as well as areas of research emphasis.

The EFSD/Boehringer Ingelheim European Diabetes Research Programmes are intended to stimulate and accelerate European research in diabetes in the specific areas of common interest.

Mechanism of Support and Review

The Programmes will consider funding of basic research projects up to Euro 100,000 in total for projects lasting up to 2 years, and clinical research projects up to Euro 400,000 in total for projects lasting up to 3 years. According to the duration and timetable of the projects, funds will be made available annually. The Programme Board, at the suggestion of the Review Committee, may at its discretion recommend an award in a different amount from that requested, but which is considered more appropriate for the proposed studies.

Applications for an EFSD/Boehringer Ingelheim grant are invited from single non-profit institutions or groups of such institutions from Europe and associated countries. The principal investigator and any co-investigators must be employed full-time at a non-profit institution and the study must be performed at their place of work.

Applications will be subject to scientific review by a specialised and independent ad hoc committee. It is anticipated that applications will be received, reviewed and approved for funding by June 2013.

Prior to any final decision on funding, and in order to offer applicants the opportunity to benefit from the review process, EFSD reserves the right to request revision to applications in accordance with the recommendations of the Review Committee.

Research Grant Applications

Applications for research grants may be subjected to pre-review (or triage) procedures. In this event, any application rejected at pre-review will not be subject to a complete scientific review. The deadline for receipt of research grant applications for funding this year is 1 April 2013.
