The Vistakon Research Fellowships were created in 2011 and are made available through the support of Vistakon. The previous awards were named the Vistakon Dry Eye Research Fellowships and supported investigators in their basic and clinical research related to dry eye syndrome.

There are approximately 125 million contact lens wearers worldwide and 38 million in the U.S. alone, according to a 2012 National Eye Institute confirmed statistic. Of growing concern in relation to contact lens wear is the increase in infections related to poor or inconsistent lens care and effectiveness of various cleaning solutions. With support from Vistakon, the ARVO Foundation for Eye Research will provide one Contact Lens Research Fellowship, which will highlight basic research, including contact lens care and cleaning requirements.
