The ARVO Foundation is pleased to offer this series of biennial awards. The Merck Innovative Ophthalmology Research Awards (IORA) encourage young researchers to undertake investigative work in critical areas of ophthalmology that may one day lead to meaningful improvements in patients' lives. It is open to researchers aged 45 years or younger who hold an MD, a PhD or an equivalent doctoral level degree. A first place prize of $15,000 and two second place prizes of $10,000 will be awarded in each of two categories for a total of $70,000 in awards.

The Merck Innovative Ophthalmology Research Award (IORA) was formerly Merck's Chibret Award, created in honor of French ophthalmologist Dr. Paul Chibret. IORA is designed to encourage researchers to undertake investigative work in critical areas of ophthalmology. First awarded in 2009, the IORA is offered through the ARVO Foundation thanks to a generous grant from Merck.

Since the award was established in 1982, many young recipients have made dramatic contributions to scientific knowledge in the field of ophthalmology, as Dr. Chibret did more than 100 years ago. Over the years, all these young researchers have displayed the same inventiveness, realism and rigor that drive all scientific discoveries.
