The Metabolomics Platform is a joint research facility created by the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) and the Spanish Biomedical Research Network in Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Disorders (CIBERDEM).
Metabolomics allows a metabolic fingerprint, or profile, to be obtained from a complex biological sample. It uses complementary analytical techniques that detect a broad spectrum of metabolites, such as mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance. With these analysis platforms you can obtain an unaddressed and semiquantitive measure of metabolites present in biological arrays such as serum, urine, tissue and/or cultures.Metabolomics aims to collect the maximum information from these arrays with minimum handling of the sample. Once these measurements are acquired, an accumulation of data is obtained using multivariant statistical techniques to extract relevant biochemical information. In this way, the particular status or pathological metabolic profile is determined, which can later be used to study the causes of that pathology and to establish new biomarkers and/or therapeutic target. There are different fields of application in metabolomics such as studies at the level of nutritional lic interventions, phenotyping of animal models that have been genetically modified, the study of cell cultures in response to different stimuli or studies of fluxomics through isotope marking, among others.
The Metabolomics Platform provides a service of maximum quality for conducting a reference investigation in Metabolomics. Specialist support and consultancy is guaranteed in all phases of the project in development (from experimental design to thet treatment of samples, data analysis and the transformation of that data to relevant biochemical information.
A choice of experiments and core more convenient for study: 1H with water supression, CPMG (low molecular weight filter), diffussion (high molecular weight filter), 2D spectroscope, studies of 13C with isotope dial.
Preparation and analysis of biofluids and/or tissue samples in GC MS as well as in LC-MS.
Use of algorythms and multivariant data handling, multidimensional visualization (PCA, PLS, PLS-DA ...) and analysis of results.
Identification/quantification of metabolites with more developed variations. Statistical treatments of data derived from that identification.
Combination and comparison of different data, “data mining” in an approximation linked to system biology.
