Aquaporins (AQPs) are a family of water channels consisting of 13 members, AQP0 to AQP12. To date, AQP3, 7, 9, and 10 have been recognized to belong to aquaglyceroporins, as they are also permeated by a variety of small neutral solutes, such as glycerol as well as water. AQP7 is abundantly expressed in human adipose tissue and acts as an adipose glycerol channel in vivo. AQP7 human gene expression studies have yield different results depending on the obesity group or the adipose depot analyzed. In this line, a previous report points out for a down-regulation of AQP7 gene expression in subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) from morbid obese women.
In this presentation we will review the scientific contributions performed by our research group regarding AQP7 adipose tissue gene expression in the context of obesity and type 2 diabetes. This brief review will introduce the main research lines that we are carrying out in our group.
